A Safety Message from the President

Know Your Radio Impound Rules

Recently there has been a rash of radio impound violations due to many more pilots using 2.4 GHz radios.  A recent change to the field rules now does not require pilots utilizing 2.4 GHz radios to impound their radio.  All 72 MHz radios are still required to be impounded at all times.  In addition, all pilots when flying must have their field permit on the appropriate frequency flag including 2.4 GHz radios.  This is a serious safety rule that all members need to follow and all members should be assisting to enforce this rule.  Again, the Board does not want to be the “Radio Police” so we are asking for voluntary compliance with this safety rule by all members and ask all members to help with reminding those pilots not in compliance.  THANK YOU!

Know Your Boundaries

At our last Omahawks Board meeting it was brought to our attention pilots have been flying out of bounds in Hawk Field.  Specifically, there was an airplane crash in someone’s backyard south of Fort Street.  The Board of Directors would like to remind all flyers of Rule #5 of Hawk Field Rules state:

·         All flying must be within the Standing Bear Lake Recreation Area boundaries and east of the safety fence at Hawk Field, with the exception of helicopters, as noted in Field Rule #6.  When flying off the lake, all aircraft must remain over the lake.

This rule simply means all aircraft must be flown north of Fort Street (not over or to the south of Fort Street), to the east of and/or over the runway to the borders of Standing Bear Lake, and to the north over the lake and Standing Bear Lake property.

It is every club member’s job to help keep Hawk Field safe and not cause a potential scenario where a home in the surrounding area can be damaged, or worse, someone gets hurt.

Please remind yourself and others if you see them flying out of bounds to correct their flight pattern!

Know Your Noise Level

Recently the Omahawks Board of Directors received a complaint from a citizen, forwarded from the Omaha Parks District, concerning a noise complaint.  The complaint indicated our planes are not in compliance with state, county, and city noise ordinances.  Although there are no such noise ordinances the Board is familiar with, this is a very important issue all members must keep in mind.  Due to our location we all must be cognizant of the sound levels our aircraft emit.  Rule #4 of the Hawk Field Rules states:

·         All R/C aircraft must meet AMA guidelines for noise

The current guideline is no more than 90dB at nine feet.  The Omahawks Board of Directors takes this complaint very seriously and has purchased a digital sound meter for use at the field.  If you are not sure how loud your aircraft is please ask a Board member to retrieve the sound meter so your plane can be tested.  If an aircraft is suspected of not meeting the noise guidelines it will probably be checked by a Board member for compliance.  No one on the Board wants to be the “Noise Police” so we ask for voluntary compliance and ask members do not make unnecessary modifications to their engines and mufflers that affect engine noise levels.  In addition, club membership needs to be reminded the agreement the Omahawks enjoys with the Omaha Parks District to use and manage Hawk Field can be terminated by either party at any time for no reason.  We do not want to give the Omaha Parks District a reason to act on this clause so we want to remain responsible tenants of Hawk Field.  If any member has questions please contact any Omahawks Board member for assistance.
